If you are thinking about turning comedy into a career, there are some things that you should know before even trying to make this something that you do for income. Improv is a free form of comedy art and just like an actor or actress, it might take a while for you or your improv group to get discovered. This is why it might be best to have something on the side that will help you gain some income in the between time. This will give you some ideas of what you can do to turn your love for comedy and acting into a career.

You should consider your education; improv comedy might not require that you have a background in acting, but it is a good tool to help you learn some of the things that you need to know when trying to make this into something that will last a lifetime. You want to look for schools, colleges, universities, and even community colleges that have a good running stance on producing famous actors and celebrities in this field of work. Then you want to enroll in all the acting classes that you can possibly get into. Another thing to consider is public speaking of any kind; this will give you the tools that you need to learn how to speak in front of larger groups of people and limit your fear.

Once you finish all of these courses and accomplishments, you will want to add them to your resume. The more things that you can accomplish, the better your resume will look to anyone that is reviewing it. When it comes to improv comedy, almost anyone can learn how to do it.

However, if you want to make it into a career you have to be able to show anyone that you are trying to get employed under that you have professional training and know what you are doing more so then someone that comes off the street.

Get your face out there, or even the improv group that you are working with. Try booking some skits at local improve clubs and try and help build your name and get you or your improv group known around town.
You should get some professional portraits done of you or your group and add those to your flyer so it looks like what you are doing is professional. The more that you spread the word about your improv or improv group, the better your chances are to get people to show up at your show. Once people are at the show, you need to have them active in the acts and show them how fun improv comedy actually is. If you can do this it, might ensure that you always have people coming back to see your shows.

The best things for you to do if you are looking to make improv comedy a profession will be to learn how the industry works. You need to make sure that you are on time to the appointments that you make. This shows that you care about your work and that you are passionate about succeeding.

Networking is very important in almost any career that you choose to do. It is what helps you to get a fan base and gets you noticed. Let others know what comedy clubs that you will be performing at and other important details.

Improv comedy is not something may think about first when they want to go into the comedy field but this is how a lot of notable stand-up comedians got their starts. You can make this a career, but this is something that you might have to work hard at doing. You have to be dedicated and really want to turn a hobby or something fun into a way to earn an income.
